IntelliCap: a unique R&D tool for the targeted delivery of pharmaceutical drugs and biologs to the gastro-intestinal tract
Whether it’s in the development of orally administered pharmaceutical drugs or functional food ingredients, site absorption studies in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract are an important part of evaluating their effectiveness. Existing technologies for the controlled release of drugs and functional food ingredients in the GI tract are either time consuming (for example traditional formulation development), invasive and therefore altering normal gut function, or require dedicated imaging infrastructures.
Medimetrics’ IntelliCap technology provides a faster, better, cost-effective and convenient means for the controlled release of drugs or functional food ingredients to specific sites in the GI tract. As an added benefit, quantitative data such as GI temperature, pH profile, and transit data are measured and recorded during the process. This data available for each subject can prove invaluable in evaluating study results.
In the form of a compact capsule (11 x 26 mm), the IntelliCap incorporates a microprocessor, battery, pH sensor, temperature sensor, RF wireless transceiver, fluid pump and drug reservoir. It communicates via its wireless transceiver to an external control unit worn by the test subject.
IntelliCap technology features real-time wireless data recording, plus wireless remote control of drug delivery, giving researchers the ability to monitor an IntelliCap’s progress through the GI tract and direct the delivery profile ‘on the fly’. IntelliCap puts drug delivery at your command.
The IntelliCap has been designed to allow repeatable assessment of candidate drug or functional food ingredient performance to be organized and completed quickly with a minimum of preparation.
